In addition to its collection of items for private individuals, the TARMAC Legacy team considers each specific request, provided it is serious and respectful of aeronautics.
This was the case with the request from London-based architecture firm Populous, which approached TARMAC Aerosave in 2021.
It had just won the tender for the renovation and extension of the Meinau stadium in Strasbourg.
Specialising in large-scale buildings, Populous incorporated the use of reused materials and renewable energies into its project, with the aim of achieving energy efficiency. Among other solutions, the stadium roof will be covered with 900 m² of photovoltaic panels, and rainwater will be collected and reused for sanitary facilities and watering the pitch.
The architect came up with the idea of using aircraft panels as sunshades. Their aesthetic and insulating qualities, as well as the curvature of such parts, lend themselves perfectly to this new function. These panels will be placed on the south stand, which houses the official box, the players’ changing rooms, the press stands and the general public seating area.
Given the large format required, TARMAC Aerosave is preparing elements measuring approximately 6 metres high by 2.5 metres wide. Unlike mass-produced factory materials, these aeronautical panels will all be different, preserving the memory of the journeys they have made. Some of the components of these fuselage sections are being preserved to remind future spectators at the Meinau of their original purpose.
Work on the stadium began in the summer of 2023 and will be completed in July 2026. In total, nearly 200 panels, equivalent to 20 to 25 fuselages, will be supplied by TARMAC Aerosave. About half have already been cut and prepared for this project, which is a long-term undertaking that is progressing as this type of wide-body aircraft is dismantled.
